Description
Very detailed and vibrant original Hopi painting by R.S. Pentewa 1927-2002 (also known as Richard or ''Dick'' Sitko Pentewa) of Oraibi/Orayvi Village.
Dated 8-69 on back.
Measures 14x12'' and is signed "R.S. Pentewa" who was one of eleven children of the famous katsina/kachina doll carver, Otto Pentewa. He was born and raised at Kykotsmovi/Kikotsmovi watching his father carve and paint. While mostly known as a carver, the younger Pentewa was also a very talented painter; he won many awards over his long and distinguished career as a fine artist.
The name Kykotsmovi means Mound of Ruined Houses. Hopi from Old Oraibi (o-RYE-bee) founded this settlement near a spring at the base of Third Mesa. Kykotsmovi (kee-KEUTS-mo-vee), also known as New Oraibi, has offices of the Hopi Tribal Council. The village was founded after an internal Hopi dispute in Oraibi in 1906 concerning how to interact with missionaries and federal agents and programs. Kykotsmovi is sometimes referred to as Oraibi or New Oraibi.
