The pigment of maple wood burls is light in color compared to most other wood species. The figured patterns and bold colors found in the grain of burl wood are unlike any other wood design, which makes them highly-prized for showing off fine craftsmanship. Hybrid blanks using Stabilized Maple Burl goes through a process that impregnates the wood or burl with resins and renders it into an ideal / plastic like ability. The finished turned blanks have a vibrant grain and a surface with a brilliant and durable shine.
As a world renowned artisan, I was able to form this extra fine shaving set through a painstaking process that involved several hours and stages in order to present a finely polished work of art. Each blank was measured and drilled before inserting a brass tube. They were then trued on each end before being placed on my Delta midi-lathe for the shaping using various chisels. When the desired shape was achieved I then took them through a multi-stage sanding process finishing with nine steps of micro-mesh, followed by a three step polishing resulting in a glass like finish.
