will effectively treat up to a 14" trunk diameter. The 3/8" implants were made for trees with a 3" to 8" diameter. (There are Super 1/2" implants made for trees with a trunk diameter of 8" or larger. There are also 1/4" Mini implants for trees with a trunk diameter between 1.5" and 3".)
Iron implants are useful in trees where iron deficiencies are difficult to control by foliage or soil feeding. Such iron deficiencies are normally associated with calcareous, arid, or sandy soil conditions. Trees most susceptible are oak (pin oak), black locust, eucalyptus, birch, sweet gum (liquid amber), pines, sycamore, magnolia, dogwood, podocarpus, poplar, catalpa, citrus, peach, pear, apple, and avocado.
Standard 3/8" Instructions:
The implants are to be placed at 4 inch spacing (3 inches for severe deficiency) around the lower tree trunk in an upward spiral pattern. To determine the number of implants required, measure the trunk diameter at 4' off the ground. Then multiply by 3.14 and divide by 4 (inches). Five implants will effectively treat up to a 7" trunk diameter.
Using a 3/8 inch diameter drill bit, drill the implant holes to a depth of 1.25" beneath the inner bark layer. Place the implants into the holes, pressing them firmly until they are tightly inside the holes, Then, gently tap them in, using a hammer and blunt instrument (dowel rod or bolt) until they are seated just beneath the inner bark and inside of the cambium layer.
Timing:
For optimum first season response and for maximum duration control (i.e. 2-3 seasons), implants should be made after the trees are dormant, and prior to or during spring vegetative growth. Late summer/early fall treatments may be effective if trees still possess vegetative growth. If late summer applications do not provide an initial response, benefit is normally evident the following growth season.
Proper applications should provide beneficial responses for 2-3 growing seasons. Repeat applications would normally not exceed two over a 4 to 5 year period.
